Takeaway fined for safety breaches

A takeaway in Blackpool was found to be a hygiene and safety hazard by health officials.

The Burger Dome, Talbot Road, had no hot water, there was dust and grease on the premises, surfaces were covered in old food and its faulty front door hit a child.

Manager Hamid Ali, 22, of Cedar Street, Blackburn, admitted 25 offences of breaching food hygiene and health and safety laws. He was fined £2,500 and ordered to pay £365 costs by Blackpool magistrates.

His mother Tallat Ghazanfor, 51, also of Cedar Street, and the takeaway owner, had 25 similar charges against her dropped after the prosecution offered no evidence.

Lynda Bennett, prosecuting for Blackpool Council said on October 13, 2005, environmental health officials visited Burger Dome and found there was no hot water for staff to wash their hands.

The prosecutor told the court about broken tiles in the main kitchen, surfaces that could house harmful bacteria, food debris on fridge doors, switches and the till and grease on plugs, sockets and fryers. There was also mould on the seals of freezers.

On October 15, a policeman saw the heavy plate-glass door of the takeaway come off its hinge and hit a child in the back, because a pin had come loose. The Burger Dome was then served with a notice that it could not trade until the door was made safe.

Chris Capaldi, defending, said Ali, who no longer worked at the takeaway, and his mother had taken over the premises at the beginning of 2005 on the basis they would get a lease, which they had still not received. The previous owner had not paid the gas bill and the supply was disconnected.

He said: "It has taken them time to get the premises up to scratch with the help of a relative who owns a restaurant nearby. The majority of the problems have now been remedied."
