REGARDING David Bagot's remarks about many, if not all, major suppliers of central heating equipment and plumber's merchants being closed over Christmas (Letters, January 13), if he dealt with old-established and reputable suppliers who care for their customers' needs, he would have access to the parts needed over the Christmas period to repair his customer's equipment.  more...

Small town attitudes

AS a student studying in Bolton, I am amazed at the attitude of your paper with regard to the local Octagon Theatre. Considering that Bolton is eager to prove itself an independent town and not just a backwater of Manchester, the small minded, small town attitudes that Ms Crowther and Mr Roberts portray show that Bolton has a long way to go! Yes, I am sure if the Octagon did produce more commercial and less innovative theatre, (for which it has earned national acclaim), it would pull in more punters and it would also turn Bolton into a cultural wasteland! The fact that the Octagon is under-supported says a lot more about the town than it does about the theatre.  more...

OPINION: Price of partying

WE would not be such party-poopers as to suggest that a proposed two and a half day Millennium party in Bolton town centre should be scrapped, but only the short-sighted would not acknowledge any potential problems. No doubt, such an event would be well-planned, although policing it alone sounds like a nightmare - and £150 per adult is a lot of cash to dish out for a party.  more...

Support the Octagon

IN response to your article on the Octagon's cash crisis, I would like to point out that, although most people in the town claim they would go to the Octagon if a Northern comedy were on, they don't in fact put their money where their mouth is. I go to the Octagon a lot and recently called to the Box Office to book for their next show Pat and Margaret by Victoria Wood. I was amazed that there were still good seats left for each performance! I wholly expected to struggle to get tickets because it is a northern comedy!  more...
