Anti-Barratt campaigner hit by blaze

From the Bolton Evening News, first published Tuesday 20th Jan 1998.

A GARAGE run by former Birtenshaw land campaign leader David Innes has been wrecked by fire.

The Hoddlesden Village Garage body shop was one of the businesses hit by the blaze at the converted Vale Rock Mill near Darwen at the weekend.

There were 45 cars in the garage including a £40,000 BMW. At least 35 cars were destroyed.

Mr Innes, who manages the garage, said the firm was now operating from a temporary site opposite the complex.

He became a well-known figure in Bolton during the long running bid to stop Barratt building houses at Darwen Road, Bromley Cross.
