APPALLING New Year weather left BT struggling to carry out 10 times more repairs than usual in the Bolton area.
The phone company says that since the storms which hit over the Christmas period they have had to deal with up to 1,000 faulty phones at any one time in the Bolton, Bury and Wigan areas.
Normally BT have around 100 faults in the area at any one time to repair. "We have had the engineers working round the clock as much as possible," said a spokeswoman.
People who need the telephone as an emergency lifeline were given priority for repairs.
Last week extra repairmen from other areas were drafted in to help clear the backlog. People whose phone lines are not repaired by the end of the next working day are eligible for compensation.
